Population and demographics

The estimated population in the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus is 800.000, of which 85.7% are Cypriot nationals and 14.3% are foreign residents. Of Cypriot nationals 77% belong to the Greek Cypriot community, 18% to the Turkish Cypriot community and 5% to other communities. Since 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus and the island was de-facto partitioned, 99.5% of the Greek Cypriot population lives in the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and 98.7% of the Turkish Cypriot population live in the area occupied by the Turkish army at the northern part of the island.
